Difficult weather conditions in the earlier part of this year is blamed for some peach orchards having to close their season early. Gillespie County suffered extreme drought, insufficient chill hours and a late freeze in March. Texas A & M Agrilife Extension Service who tracks chill hours stated that trees only experienced about 2 thirds of chill hours this season. Chill hours are the hours above freezing and below 45 degrees. Freestone variety peaches were affected the most. Reported by the Standard Radio Post.
