The New World Screwworm has reared its head in Texas after 50 years according to Texas A&M Agrilife. The U.S. Department of Agriculture suspended importations of cattle, horses and bison from Mexico into the U.S. to prevent New World screwworm movement north. This fly poses a serious threat to livestock and wildlife as it deposits eggs into the wounds of living animals leading to larval infestations. The fly can host on any living mammal, even pets and humans. For a fact sheet on the screwworm visit agrilifeextension.tamu.edu.
