TX DPS - license plates distributed by car sellers

Texans will soon experience a more streamlined process for receiving metal license plates when they purchase a car from a dealer. A new state law starting July 1, motor vehicle dealers will begin issuing metal license plates directly to buyers of new and used vehicles instead of paper temporary tags. Consumers will drive off the lot with their plates already in place. Until their registration sticker arrives from their county office, customers must keep their buyer’s plate receipt in the vehicle for verification of the purchase and pending registration to law enforcement.
