TXDOT’s humorous highway signs are not funny to the Feds. TXDOT amused drivers with their humorous signage messaging since 2012. New federal guidelines from the US Federal Highway Administration states that pop culture references and slogans are not acceptable. Traffic safety campaign messages may adversely affect respect for the sign. Plus, many drivers may not be able to understand and process the information. So, in the future, you won’t see signs with Only Rudolph should drive lit or The Eyes of Texas are upon you, Buckle Up. New guidelines take effect 2026.
