US Dept of HHS - screwworm

First human case in the US of the New World screwworm reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Sunday. According to Reuters, the case of the flesh-eating parasite was travel related and involved a person returning from an outbreak-affected Latin American country. The case was confirmed by the CDC in early August. Screwworms can be devastating in cattle and wildlife. The USDA has estimated a screwworm outbreak in Texas could cost the biggest U.S. cattle-producing state, about $1.8 billion in livestock deaths and other expenses. PHOTO: AP
